Biking on Saturday
I did my longest ride of the year on Saturday. I got up very early. I was on my bike by 5:20 am. It was just starting to get light. I decided that I would just take my sunglasses. One less thing to carry. It always take a long time to get out of DC. That’s especially true when a little over a mile from my house is the hill up Rhode Island Ave. I also decided since it was still dark to take things a little slow heading out.
There’d been a storm on Friday night and there were several limbs of trees blocking the bike path. A couple times I had to go off the path to get around them. I made very good time down the Mt. Vernon trail. I reached Mt. Vernon a little after 8. I then went down the road and turned around at Gunston Hall.
My goal was to do 60 miles. I’d hoped to add additional miles by taking the Four Mile Run trail that you pick up just south of National Airport. The problem well actually there were two problems. The most important is that this is where I ran into the wind. I just don’t ride well in wind. It really slowed me down. The other problem is it didn’t add the additional mileage I thought it would. Where the Four Mile Run trail meets up with the trail out of DC, I headed back into DC. The wind had really tired me out so I did some quick thinking and decided to head back on the Mt. Vernon Trail and turn around at National Airport.
This did the trick. I did just over 63 miles. I got back to my house around 11:30 after making a short stop to pick up something to drink. All in all I think I did pretty good. I wasn’t as prepared as I wanted to be in the morning so I probably lost about 10 minutes there. That doesn’t seem like a great deal of time but after 10 am or so the trail started to get really crowded.
I have this Friday off for the 4th. The goal is to equal if not exceed Saturday’s ride. This time it will be straight out on the W&OD Trail and I hope to leave right at 5am.
Cholesterol News
I got my cholesterol back. Some good news on the bad front and a slight disappointment on the good front. The good news on the bad front is that my bad cholesterol (LDL) went from 142 to 128. The slight disappointment is that my good went from 70 to 61. Overall my total cholesterol went from 228 to 205.
So to do a quick recap from January of 2008 my total cholesterol has gone from 230 to 205. Good cholesterol from 50 to 61. Bad cholesterol from 160 to 128.
The numbers are definitely moving in the right direction!
July Goal
I’m going to try and alter my diet. Well I think a better way of putting it is what I eat. I’m going to work with my trainer and drop out some of the bad things I’ve been eating. Today I had my last Coke for a while. I’m going to see how long I can go without having one. It also means laying off all the junk food that I eat. I don’t a great deal but it’s enough. It’s probably the reason my good cholesterol dropped.
I’m also going to increase my exercising. I’m hoping to move training days to Tuesday/Thursday. This way I’d be able to add an extra day of spinning. I’m not sure that will work. In the mean time I’m going to be adding a walk after dinner. When the weather gets too hot, I’ll probably ride the stationary bike. I’m also going to get to the gym early in training days and do some cardio before the work out. I’m hoping to loose around 4 or 5 pounds this month.

Back to the Gym
Yes, I'm finally back at the gym on an almost regular basis. Now, that I no longer have a cold or that stomach thing or there are all sorts of holidays or an inauguration and any other distractions, I'm finally getting back to the gym.
I have a new personal trainer too. His name is Ed. He is in fact the head of the training department at Results. I feel very lucky to have him. Tomorrow will be the 4th session I've had with him. I' seeing him twice a week. I'm still sore from the workout he gave me yesterday which is a good thing. I'm back to spinning on Saturdays (I might have to miss this Saturday depending on when the washer will be delivered). Now I have to figure out the rest of my schedule. Training is Wednesdays and Fridays Spinning is on Saturdays. Then I have my own work out session on Sundays. So I need to add at least one if not two more session at the gym. There's a possibility of one more spinning session and a yoga class.
My weight is pretty good. I lost what I gained over the holidays. Now I have to work on cutting out some of the junk I eat to get down to my actual weight. Ed says I won't be loosing weight but shifting it around. But I think I can still stand to loose some weight. Again I look at it as the weight I should be if I cut out all those things I shouldn't be eating. That's not to say I'm going to cut them out entirely. It's just I need to eat a little better.
I also hope to get in a couple of evenings riding the stationary bike.
So fitnesswise the new year is starting out pretty well.

Clothes that fit
It's nice to have clothes fit again. I put aside a bunch of jeans at the beginning of the year that no longer fit. They were too small. I commented on this in an early post. But I tried on some of the jeans again this morning.
I did this because I got on the scale this morning and I weighed in at 171 pounds. Yeah!!! Let me say that again YEAH!!! I thought to myself I should try the jeans again. The 34 inch waist one I had no problems getting into. The 33 inch ones felt a little tight. It was also hard to get your hands into the pockets too. But I think if I wore a pair for awhile they'd loosen up some. I've noticed that with jeans that they seem tight when you first put them on but loosen up as the day goes by.
I think I need to pay a little more attention to my abs. I have a DVD of exercises which I need to do on a regular basis. I have a tendency to start doing them and be very good for a couple of weeks and then something interrupts my schedule and well I just start doing them. But I'm going to get back into it starting tomorrow. As well as getting back on the stationary bike. The goal is to do both of these things 2-3 times a week.
I've set up an appointment with a new training at Results. My first work out will be this coming Friday. I think for awhile I'm just going to do once a week. I hope to get into some of the other classes that they have. I went to spinning again today. I hope to add another class on Wednesday. My thought is to work out on Sunday, Tuesday and then have the personal training session on Friday. I'd take spinning classes on Wednesday and Saturday. They also have an intro yoga course on Thursday. Hopefully the yoga course will help with my flexibility. I also have to get up enough nerve to actually do it. It's also at 7 in the morning which means a very early morning. But for now that's the plan.
I hope to start some of it next week. With the election on Tuesday it probably means no spinning class on Wednesday because it starts at 7. Thus starts the next phase of working out. Perhaps a new weight goal is to be under 170 pounds but that's for another time at least for now.

Final Training Session With Randy
Today was my final session with Randy my trainer. It was rather bitter sweet.
Nine months ago today I had my first training session with Randy. We did a fitness assessment so that's what we did today.
I posted some really impressive numbers here they are (you have to scroll down Blogger doesn't seem to like the table I used):
I will say again that you can now see muscles in my arms where there were none before. I'm wearing clothes that had been too big. My 36 inch waist jeans are now too big. My belts are running out of holes and not because my waist is too big.
My body fat went from 26.4% to 23.7%
My lean weight went from 128.8 to 131.4
My fat weight went from 46.2 to 40.8. I lost 5.4 pounds of fat from my body!
My cardiovascular endurance. Here's the test you're on a treadmill for 5 minutes at a speed of 4 miles an hour. My heart rate in January was 174. My heart rate today 151. That's a difference of 23 beats per minute. That means if I was on the tread mill for 30 minutes today my heart would beat 690 fewer times then would have 9 months ago. It shows the muscle, my heart, is getting stronger.
Muscular endurance. There are two exercises associated with this. How many sit ups in this case it was crunches could you do in a minute. In January I could do 35 which put me in the 49 percentile for my age. Today I did 51 which put me in the 65 percentile. Next test how many push ups in a minute. In January I did 19 push ups putting me in the 40 percentile. Today I did 53 push ups putting me in the 98 percentile.
The only thing I didn't improve greatly on was my flexibility. Randy said he should have worked harder on that. I said we both should have worked harder on it. I knew it was a problem going in and I should have been doing more about it between our sessions but didn't. So I can't fault Randy for that one at all.
If I do say so myself I rocked. I was very pleased with what I'd accomplished. Randy was too.
Once again a great big thanks goes out to Randy for pushing me every work out. I enjoyed each and every session. Sometimes I thought I was not going to make to the end but I did each time. Randy kept pushing me. I'm probably in the best shape of my life. And I don't think that's an overstatement. I know I haven't weighed this little in over ten years.
So I'm going to say thanks again to my friend Randy for all he helped me accomplished.

Randy, My Personal Trainer
As I've said before, Randy is the best personal trainer you could possible hope for.
The sad news is that tomorrow is my last session with Randy. He's going to be moving to Los Angeles at the end of the month.
I've made so much progress working with him it is amazing.
I'm reminded of how much progress I've made each workout we do. I do exercises that just a few months ago I would not have been able to complete. At the end of each workout, I'm still sore and worn out and drenched in sweat (as I should be), but I notice that my recovery time is getting better and better.
Here's a part of a post from My Personal Trainer Rocks this is when I had just started working with Randy:
I’ve been taking personal training sessions with Randy for a little over a month. I’ve never done the same workout routine with him twice. There are similar exercises in the routines but never the same routine from start to finish. The order of the exercises are not shuffled around so although the exercise are not done in the same order you’re still doing all the same exercises. That has never happened. At the end of most sessions, Randy will say now you might hurt tomorrow. My response is that I’ll hurt by the time I’m done with my shower. This is only a slight exaggeration. Usually I do hurt the next day. But I’ve noticed that the more I train the faster I recover from the last training session.
The results I've achieved with Randy, as I've said before, are fantastic. I actually have muscles in my arms that you can see. My coordination and balance have improved dramatically. My overall strength has increased and my stamina has increased as well. It's amazing what I've been able to accomplish in such a short time with Randy's help.
So I'm going to say it once again my personal trainer ROCKS.
Randy, thanks for all your help, encouragement and motivation.

Weighty Matters Again
I've reached another one of my goals regarding my weight. I'm now below 175. Well I should say I'm below 175 most of the time.
175 had been my floor for several months. It seemed no matter what I did I could never get below that. Now most of the time when I weigh myself I am below 175. The lowest I've been is 172.5 that was on my "official" weigh in day which is Saturday.
I've been reading conflicting arguments on whether you should weigh yourself each day. The argument for it is that you can spot a sudden increase in your weight and immediately take action to stop it. The other side say your weight fluctuates over the course of a day let alone a week. There recommendation is do it once a week. Do it the same time each week and that's a better way to compare how you're doing. I take that approach in that Saturday is my official recording day. I do jump on the scale a couple of time during the week just to see where I am. I usually do it when I haven't eaten all that well the previous day.
One thing would be very nice if you could target where you loose the weight. Unfortunately that's not possible if it was I'd have a flat stomach. But I'm going to start working on my stomach. Results offers a 15 minute ab class every half hour in the morning. I may see if I can get in early enough and take it before I have my training session on Tuesday. If not I'll start on Wednesday.
I had a really good workout yesterday. I woke up rather sore from it today which is a good sign. I take some of the exercises I did with Randy and rework them into my own workout. I have to say I think I did a very good job.
Today I'm going to take it easy. I have the day off so I'm going to go down to the mall and see some exhibits and hopefully have lunch with a friend.
Once again the weather is fantastic for August. It is a little warmer than the past few days and slightly more humid but still a fantastic day. I'm going to enjoy it!

Tale of the Waistline
I decided to conduct a little experiment this morning. Since it is Friday, it is casual day at my office. I usually wear blue jeans. I wondered if from all my work outs if I'd really lost weight where it seems to matter most. Randy, my trainer, says that I look thinner. But it is hard for me to tell.
I thought I'd see if I could fit into any of my old jeans. I don't throw out clothes that don't fit me because I'm going to take them to Good Will or some other place so they can be used again. That's why I have a big pile of clothes that don't fit because I never get around to taking them anywhere.
The waist on my jeans now is a 36. Not too long ago I just about filled all 36 inches. Now, however, the pants are loose. I went into the wardrobe I have in my front bedroom and dug out some old jeans. I started with the jeans with the 32 inch waist. The waist size I was for years. I got them one but they were too tight. On to the next size 33 inch waist. They were too tight too. The nest size was 34 inch. They fit. But with the two pairs of jeans that were too tight I could button the button and zip up the zipper. At the beginning of this year I couldn't do either with those pair of jeans.
One other objective way of seeing that working out is really paying off.

Working Out Update
I had a busy week. I did the bike rides on Saturday and Sunday. Tuesday I had a session with Randy. What did we work on? Of course legs. Wednesday I took a spinning class (legs again). Thursday training session also had leg work in it too. Friday morning I could barely get out of bed.
I'm taking this weekend off. I was going to go to a spinning class this morning but I'm still sore. I decided not to push my luck. I might if I feel up to it go and work out tomorrow but that's a big if.
Next week I'm taking a break from training sessions. Randy's out of town at the end of the week and I had some scheduling conflicts with Tuesday. So with the week free I'm going to try something new. There's a spinning class on Tuesday. The instructor is a guy I took classes with like 9 years ago when I was at Ballys. Then a yoga class on Thursday. Randy keeps saying that a yoga class would help with my flexibility. I'd do my regular workouts on Wednesday and Friday.
I've reached another floor on my weight. I'm hovering right around 175. I haven't been eating as well as I should in the past couple of weeks. I'm hoping to try and improve on that this week. I'm going to a friends cook-out today but plan on not eating too much. Ok, well maybe I'll start tomorrow. I'm hoping by Labor Day to be below 175 and closer to 170.
I think I'm hitting a good stride on everything. The training has been going very well. Randy's up the intensity of the workouts. Most of the time I feel totally drained at the end of them which is the way I should feel. I do notice that I recover a lot quicker then when I started with him. I'm going to start riding my bike to work a couple of days a week. I would have this week but my legs were not into it. I also had several after work events this week. The bike rides are going very well as last weekend points out. Next weekend the plan is to do two more. The idea being to increase the mileage for each day. I'm hoping to get closer to 100 miles over two day.
And that's where I stand with one more thing to say is that I can actually see muscles in my arms. Yeah!

My Clothes Don't Fit Anymore
But not in the way clothes normally don't fit.
I bought a great pair of shorts last year. Unfortunately I had to get a 36 inch waist. It was the realization of my ever expanding waist line. I wore the shorts yesterday. I went to the gym in my workout clothes and changed into the shorts after I'd taken my shower. I forgot to bring my belt with me. I discovered that I really needed the belt. I had to keep pulling the shorts up. They kept slipping down over my hips.
It means that the weight I've lost is making my waist smaller. Now of course it would be nice if all the weight would come off my waist but of course things don't work that way. However, it is making a change. I wore a pair of dress pants last week that had become tight over time but now fit just fine.
A couple people at work have mentioned that they've noticed I've lost weight which was very nice of them.
I'm trying to figure out exactly how much I've lost. Since the beginning of March I've lost around 7 pounds. If you go back to January I was around 186 so that's just about 11 pounds.
Like I've said I think the new goal is to get down around 170. Then I need to see if I can maintain that weight. Maybe I can even go a little lower.
It's nice to have my clothes not fit. Not because they are too small but because they are too big.

175.5 Pounds
I'm almost there. Almost there to my goal of being 175 pounds. I think I'm doing really well at reaching it. It probably won't happen for a couple more weeks. I know I only have a pound to go but at my office in the next week we'll be celebrating two people's birthdays. We also celebrated one this week. It means lots of unhealthy food to eat. I'm not going to not eat but I'm going to not eat too much (well that's the idea anyway). That might be a tall order.
With the goal so close I think I'm going to have to change it. I think getting down to 170 or close to it is the next goal. But I still need to be eating. That's especially true now that I'm working out so much. My trainer reminded me of that. He said some people can sabotage there progress because they don't eat enough calories to reflect the new condition of their body. I found this out when I was training for the AIDS Rides. I seemed always to be hungry and I was eating more food because of all the training rides I was doing. The problem was that once the ride happened I didn't cut back on what I was eating and so I gained weight.
I'm trying to think of the last time I weighed so little and it is a good five years or more. I think 170 is a good new goal or as close to it as possible. I will really start concentrating on that after next week passes. Who knows if I'm careful and don't pig out too much I might stay right around 175.
In other news, my trainer is out next week. He's going to Spain. So I'm on my own with working out. I'll probably do a greatest hits routine. I'll take something from the last few workouts that we've done. I can't match the pace that Randy sets for me but I'm going to try and get as close as possible to it.
Tomorrow I'm going to try and go for a 40 mile bike ride. I fixed the odometer. The wire to the computer was loose. It looked like it was connected but I guess it wasn't pushed all the way in. I found this out when I was filling the tires with air last weekend. I moved the bike in just the right way that the wire came completely off the computer. I just stuck it back in and it was all set.
I was going to go on the ride today but it is supposed to rain later in the day. Also my next door neighbor had a party last night and I was not able to get to sleep as early as I wanted to. So I'm just as glad I decided to go on Sunday.
I have to say that overall I'm very pleased with the progress that I am making. Having a trainer makes such an incredible difference. I know I'm in much better shape then when I started this at the end of January. I actually have muscles in my arms that you can see!

Weighty Matters
No not what's going on in the world but the fact that I'm loosing some weight.
Essentially my weight floor has become my weight ceiling. In the past, I've been able to get my weight down to 180 pounds. But I never seemed to be able to get below that. So 180 became my weight floor.
Now, that I've really started watching what I eat and combining that with my personal training sessions and the other physical activity (riding the stationary bike and my road bike) 180 pounds has become my weight ceiling. Today I weighed in at 176. In fact I've been below 180 for the past week.
I accomplished this by taking a good long look at what I eat and cutting out the junk. I used to have a coke with most lunches. I don't do that any more. If I go out to eat I make sure to have water to drink. About once a week I go to Subway for lunch. I don't get the combo meal any more just the sandwich. I usually get the chicken breast sandwich and I make sure not to have any sort of dressing added to it. I also make sure to get wheat bread. A couple of times each week I have cereal for dinner. I have a cup and a half. Later in the evening I have a yogurt.
I'm trying to get a routine down of riding the stationary bike. I want to do it at least once over the weekend and twice during the week. My goal is to ride 40 minutes each time. I haven't perfected the schedule yet but I'm getting close to it.
I'm also back on my road bike. Today I got up early and rode down past Alexandria. The round trip was around 30 miles. I don't know the exact mileage because my computer on the bike stopped working. I'm not sure exactly why. The clock on it is still working. It was rainy when I started the ride so maybe that had something to do with it. I'm not sure. All I know is that when I turned around it stopped working. I'm going to let it dry out and see if it works tomorrow. I'm hoping to get in another ride on Sunday but it depends on how my legs feel. Especially since I did a leg work out with my trainer on Thursday and today rode for 30 miles. My legs might be screaming tomorrow.
I figure I've lost about 7 pounds since the beginning of March. I have to decide how much more I want to loose. I thought a goal of 175 was pretty good but maybe I'll aim for 170. I just wish all the weight would come off my waste but unfortunately it doesn't work that way. I'm going to try and do some ab exercises on a regular basis starting on Monday. I hope that will help firm up that section.
I'd say so far so good. Actually very good come to think of it.

Loosing weight
That age old bug-a-boo loosing weight. I've been trying on and off for the past few years to loose some weight. But about the only thing I've been able to do is gain it. I came back from visiting my family at Christmas time and weighed in at 193 pounds. That is the most I have ever weighed. I decided it was time to really get serious and get at it. This Saturday I was at 178. I hope to loose about 8 to 10 more pounds.
I've taken a good long hard look at what I eat and have made some changes. I don’t make sandwiches and bring them to work for lunch anymore. I still go out and have a sandwich but almost always from Subway. My lunches now are salads. I have lettuce (the good stuff not iceberg) along with part of a chicken breast along with tomatoes and some veggies. For dinner a couple times of week I have cereal. The other days I’ll have rice and frozen vegetables and sometimes just vegetables.
I also bought a diet book called: You on a Diet. And someday I might actually read it but I've heard good things about it. The big thing about this book is not so much how much you weigh but how big your waist line is. The thing to try not to have in your food in high fructose corn syrup. This is supposed to be very bad for you. The fat it produces goes straight to your gut. And high fructose corn syrup is in just about everything. Apple sauce, salad dressing, cookies, pasta sauce and bread. Yes even bread. And of course Coke.
So I’m trying to avoid high fructose corn syrup to the best of my ability. I’m cutting down on the numbers of Cokes that I have. What I’m trying to do is this: I have a Coke one day and then not have one the day after. Then have a Coke and wait two days for the next one. The idea is to add a day between each Coke that I have.
I’m also doing more exercising. I’m going to the gym, or at least trying to go, three times a week. I’m also doing walks two to three times a week. I ridemy stationary bike three to four times a week. My goal is to ride for 40 minutes each day. What I do is eat around 6 pm. I then watch the first 20 minutes of ABC World News. At 10 to 7 pm, I go upstairs and start riding the bike. Then at 7 pm I either watch the NBC news or the Simpsons. I've found that watching TV makes the time fly. My goal is ride for an hour three days a week.
And that’s my update on my waist line which I hope will continue to get smaller along with the number on the scale.
